Christmas Program is December 12, 2013 @ 6:30 pm. All students (PK-7 Grade) must report to their homeroom classrooms by 6:00 pm.
We only have 10 more days until the Christmas program! It is so exciting and a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior as a community. The students have been working very hard and are almost ready to share their performance with you.
An email was sent before the Thanksgiving break about what students could wear. Please refer to that email if there are any questions of what your child can wear for the performance.
PK-1st Grade
Students are continuing to work on their songs for the Christmas program this week. We are also beginning our special musical activities for Christmas. Students will listen to songs by Leroy Anderson and then follow along with movements to Leroy's "Bugler's Holiday". Students will also sing a wintry poem and add percussion instruments to the stanzas.
2nd-5th Grade
Students will continue to practice for the Christmas program. We are going to be learning about Leroy Anderson and his songs, "Bugler's Holiday" and "Sleigh Ride". Students will play percussion instruments as accompaniment to an Irish "Christmas Jig" and playing some musical Christmas activities.
6th Grade
Students are working very hard on their special songs for the Christmas program. They are doing a fabulous job too! After practicing this week, we will be working on some fun musical activities for the holiday.
7th Grade
Students are working on the play for the Christmas program. The set design is finished and looks AMAZING! Thank you to the Sabish and Font families for all their hard work!!!!! Students really need to practice their lines and inflections at home. It is important for them to know the lines just prior to their own so they know when they are to come into the conversations. There will be 2 after school rehearsals next week: Tuesday, December 10th and Wednesday, December 11th in the gym from 3-4 pm. It is VERY important to try to make these rehearsals.
8th Grade
Students are doing a fabulous job for the Melodrama. It is getting a little closer and I would like all the students to have ALL their lines memorized by December 11, 2013. We will NOT be using scripts on that day. Once we come back from Christmas break, we will be having one after school rehearsal each week on Tuesdays. It is really important we have these rehearsals since one 40 minute rehearsal a week just isn't enough. Emails will follow closer to those dates with specific information.

Updates
Christmas Program...December 12th at 6:30 pm!
It is approaching quickly. The Christmas program is almost upon us. The students are ready and very excited to share all their hard work with our wonderful community. Please mark your calendars. All students. PreK-6th grade should arrive by 6:00 and report to their classrooms (homerooms). More details to come via email and on this blog so keep checking back!
Pre-K and Kindergarten
Students are working on rhythm, tempo and pitch. They are working hard on their songs for the Christmas program as well. They are all very excited to show everyone their singing talent.
1st - 5th Grade
The students sound absolutely amazing!!! It is so exciting to see the progress and we are all excited for the program so everyone can hear how hard these children have worked.
2nd-5th grade students have their quiz on the lines and spaces of the treble (G clef) and bass (F clef) on Tuesday, November 19th. We have been working on these for 4 weeks now and have been reviewing every week in class. They even had a study guide that looks exactly like their test paper to study off of for the past 4 weeks. I think they are all ready and will do a fabulous job.
6th Grade
I can't say enough about how wonderful this class is and how amazing they sound. These students have worked and practiced very hard and will just blow our audience away at the Christmas program. They are just incredible and it has been such a joy to work with such willing and hard working students.
7th Grade
This is going to be a very interesting production. They are working hard at making sure they know their lines and follow stage directions as well. It is not easy to do and they are really coming along. Keep up the hard work!
There will be 2 after school rehearsals starting the first week in December. Emails will be sent out on the specific dates and times.
8th Grade
This is going to be the best melodrama yet! They are working so very hard and it is really coming along very well. It is such a blessing to be working with them and have this opportunity. I am looking forward to watching this all come together for a really great show!

The Countdown Begins
There are only 4 class periods left of rehearsals for the Christmas program! Mark your calendars for December 12th.
Pre-K-6th Grade students are practicing so hard and are sounding angelic. They are very excited to sing the songs and share them with all of our CCCS community.
The Kindergarten through 5th grade are continuing to learn, at various levels, the lines and spaces of the treble and bass clefs, the value of specific notation and classifying these notes by playing a variety of games and online activities. The 2nd-5th graders will be having a short quiz on the lines and spaces of the treble and bass clef on November 19th and 20th. The students have a study guide for this quiz and have had it for 2 weeks. The quiz will look exactly like that guide. We are also reviewing this same guide every week together on the board.
7th Grade students are working on the Christmas program play. It will be nice to see the final production with all the music on December 12th. Students should continue to work on their lines and improving their characterizations. We are really working on exaggerating and emphasizing the lines more to bring the characters to life. It is a work in progress, but it is getting better.
8th Grade students are doing a phenomenal job acting the melodrama. It is such a blessing to see students come completely out of their element and have a blast acting out a comedy. It has been an honor to be a part of such a great production and with an amazing group of students.

Music, Music, Music and Ohhhhhhhhhh the Drama
Thank you to all of the 7th and 8th grade students and parents that came to help clean the stage on Saturday!!! It looks absolutely beautiful. I couldn't have done it without you. A special thank you to Mr. Dan for giving up some of his Saturday as well to help us with everything.

Students should continue to practice the songs every day, especially the Spanish verse of "Silent Night". It is coming along, but still needs a little more practice. It has been such a blessing to hear these children sing so beautifully and powerfully.
Students have learned about notation and their values along with the lines, spaces and clefs of the grand staff. Students filled out a study guide worksheet in class this past week. They are to keep that sheet in their homework folder so they can study and memorize what the lines and spaces are for both the Treble (G clef) and Bass (F clef). Students will be participating in many activities throughout the next 3-4 weeks to reinforce the learning of the notes and the grand staff. At the end of the unit, students will receive an exact copy of the paper they have for studying. They will need to label the lines and the spaces of both clefs, the 2 names of both clefs and write the value of each note (quarter, half, eighth, dotted half, whole, dotted quarter and sixteenth).
Grade 6
The students have been working so very hard on their songs for the Christmas program. An accompaniment CD was sent home to practice with and they have done a wonderful job singing with it. They all have great intonation! This week we sang for Father Joe. He was so impressed that they gave him goose bumps! What a blessing to hear. The students will continue to practice their songs and work on stagger breathing in "Mary Did You Know" because the last note of the song is held out for a longer time.

The Christmas play is coming along nicely. Students are to have all their lines memorized by Wednesday, October 30th. We are going to do a complete run through without stopping and without scripts.
Students are responsible for their costumes for their character in the play. This applies to understudies as well. Please have all costumes ready for an in class dress rehearsal on November 13th. If you are unsure of what your character should wear, please come and talk to me about it. I will be going over the costumes with the students this week in class so they will know what they will need.

The students are to have Act One, Scene 2 memorized by Wednesday, Oct. 30th. We will do a non-stop run through of Act One, Scenes 1 and 2 this week and then continue from where we left off last week. It has really been a wonderful blessing working with these creative and hard working students on this play.

Week In Review
Pre-K and Kindergarten
Last week all the Pre-K students were given the opportunity to try the flute. Wow! There are some amazing, budding musicians. It was a lot of fun to finish out the orchestra family unit with playing a woodwind family instrument. This week we will begin working hard on our Christmas music for the Christmas program on December 12th. The Pre-K and the Kindergarten will be opening the show by performing a few songs of their own. They are very excited about sharing all the new music they have learned. Mark your calendars!
1st-5th Grade
Last week we finished up the orchestra family unit and will begin notation, values and treble and bass clef lines and spaces. This will be a review for some, but brand new to others. We will be applying this unit to recorders coming up very soon.
We have been working very hard on learning the 3 Christmas songs for the Christmas program on December 12. All the songs are uploaded onto Teacher Ease in the digital locker. Once again, please download and print out the lyrics for the students to practice at home. The teachers have been so incredibly helpful in singing the songs in the classrooms to help out. The only song that is new to many of the students is the Spanish verse of "Silent Night". They are working very hard to learn it and are anxious to sing it for you. I'm very proud of all of them.
Grade 6
The students are continuing to practice all the songs for the Christmas program. They sound fantastic!!! I am so excited for them and for how hard they have been working. It will really be a joy to see at the Christmas program.
Grade 7
Students are coming along nicely on the Christmas play. They all have just one more week to memorize their lines. It has been a real blessing watching these students stretch themselves and acting "out of the box".
Grade 8
This was a very productive week for the 8th grade! They had completed Act 1, Scene 1 without stopping with all the lines and stage directions memorized. It was great! They are to have Act 1, Scene 2 memorized by next week. It is really going to be a fabulous production. I couldn't be more proud of each and every one of these amazing students.
We are cleaning the stage on Saturday, October 26th from 9-11 am. Please mark your calendars and bring some gloves to use. See you there!

Busy Week Ahead
We had a very productive week in Music and in Drama.
Pre-K and Kindergarten
Last week we continued our unit on orchestra families. We listened to many instruments and were able to actually see and touch a flute and a clarinet. It was fun to place the instrument and sound to the characters in "Peter and The Wolf". This week we will be playing a game categorizing the instruments into their orchestra families and begin singing our Christmas songs for the Christmas program. We also will be playing percussion instruments!
1st - 5th Grade
We worked very hard on learning our new song for the Christmas program, "Silent Night" in English and in Spanish! This was so much fun and the students really have done a wonderful job. I have heard some wonderful singing in the hall and in the classrooms as they practice the songs with their teachers. They are sounding amazing and I am so proud of them! I reminded the students to practice at home every day each song. This will help them memorize the lyrics and melodies quickly. The songs are uploaded onto digital locker in Teacher Ease. Please download them and print them out. It is a great opportunity to sing along too!
This week we will be continuing our unit on orchestra families with interactive activities on the white board. We will also be working on our Christmas songs. I am looking forward to another great week.
6th Grade
What an awesome week for 6th grade! We had auditions for the solo in "Mary Did You Know". I was so proud and surprised by all the wonderful voices. They were awesome. It was a VERY hard decision, but the 1st verse went to Katie Morales and the 2nd verse will be sung by Kaitlynn Ihlefeldt and Owen Nelson. Students also shared "Dona Nobis Pacem" with Sister Mary on Friday. It was beautiful! She was so impressed and thought it would be fun for them to sing it in Mass. What a blessing! We will continue to practice our songs this week. All the students will receive a CD with the accompaniment to "Mary Did You Know" on it. This will help them practice at home as well. It is going to be a great week and I am looking forward to their beautiful voices.

I think they are really doing a wonderful job and it is fun to watch the development of their characters. This week the students will continue to practice the play with focus on exaggeration of the characters. We have a shortened week and a shortened class time on Wednesday as well. Students need to come prepared to perform.

This last week was a great rehearsal! This has been such a wonderful blessing to watch these students bring life to these characters. I am so very proud of how each person has made their character their own and really stepped up to help and make this a fantastic experience. I am so excited for them to share it with everyone on February 22nd. This week we will be practicing Act One, Scene One to see how many students have memorized their lines by the Wednesday deadline. We will also try to master more of the stage directions within that scene.
